The Human Rights, the Rule of Law and Petitions Committee of the Senate of the Republic of Poland convenes to discuss the enforcement of ECtHR judgements

Professor Michał Seweryński has notified the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights that a meeting of the Human Rights, the Rule of Law and Petitions Committee of the Senate of the Republic of Poland is planned on 16 May 2012. The Committee convenes to discuss the enforcement of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights. The meeting is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. in the building of the Senate (room 176).

Let us remind that the issue of the enforcement of ECtHR judgements by the Polish authorities was already discussed on 12 April 2012 by the Committee for Justice and Human Rights of the Sejm, the lower parliamentary chamber. The Committee unanimously adopted a resolve to oblige the Council of Ministers to prepare an annual report on the status of the enforcement of ECtHR judgements in Poland. The Chair of the Committee, Ryszard Kalisz, stressed that such a report was necessary to enable its Senate counterpart to address the issue.

The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights hopes that the report of the Council of Ministers will be ready at least several days prior to 16 May 2012, the scheduled date of the Committee’s meeting, so that the HFHR and other non-governmental organisations or professional bodies (e.g. the Polish Bar Council Human Rights Committee) will be able to prepare for the meeting and take a stance in the discussion.
